What is a caprese salad?
A caprese salad consists of mozzarella, tomatoes, basil, and olive oil. It is served chilled and can be used as both a side dish or the main course. A simple caprese salad with avocado and strawberry is a variation to the traditional recipe.

can caprese salad be made ahead of time?
Caprese salad is traditionally prepped just before serving, but can also be prepped the day before. To make ahead, slice the mozzarella, strawberries and cherry tomatoes. Place them back in their original containers and refrigerate. Make the balsamic reduction and store it in a mason jar. Just before serving, slice the avocado and basil, then toss everything together.

5 ingredients that make a caprese salad
mozarella || Find fresh mozzarella balls at your local grocery store. They come in various sizes, I love the smaller one-inch balls. Tear them into bite-sized pieces or leave them whole!
tomatoes || Cherry tomatoes are bright little pops of flavor for this salad! Slice them in half lengthwise with a serrated knife.
basil || Roll the basil leaves into a tight bunch. Use a sharp knife to slice the basil leaves into thin ribbons. Discard any stems.
olive oil || Find a high quality extra-virgin olive oil for this salad. The olive oil flavor is prominent (and delicious!).
salt and pepper || I like coarse sea salt or Himalayan salt for this recipe. It adds beautiful texture! If possible, use freshly ground black pepper.
