Sourdough Pizza Bread

This sourdough pizza bread is the appetizer you didn't know you needed in your life. It's a thick and tangy sourdough bread base layered with all of your favorite pizza toppings. No fancy equipment necessary, it can be baked in a 9X13 pan and sliced into any size. Whether this recipes with pizza crust is shaped like breadsticks or generous pieces, you get to decide!

Winter is my favorite time of year for baking sourdough. The smell of bread baking and the coziness of the oven gently heating up my kitchen, ahhhh. It's just such a calming vibe!

This was inspired by my Sourdough Pizza Crust on this site, and pairs well with any of my Seasonal Salads. If you are new to sourdough and maybe don't even know how to start, I would go read How to Bake a Perfect Sourdough Loaf post and it will explain (in detail) how to make a sourdough starter and troubleshoot any issues that arise. And please message me or leave a comment if you have questions about it!

4. Let the pizza rest for 5 minutes, then cut into desired sizes. Sourdough pizza bread breadsticks are a crowdpleaser!

Hint: I love to par-bake my crust earlier in the day and then add the toppings and bake so it's hot and ready when my guests are hungry! I love to serve it with bowls of dipping sauces like spicy marinara or melted butter with garlic.

Substitutions

This recipe can be made with store bought sourdough French bread! If you do this, skip the par bake and just slice the bread in half and continue on to adding the toppings and baking.

If you are not concerned with this being a fermented recipe, another option would be to make this pizza crust with store bought crescent roll dough. Follow the directions on the popping fresh dough can to bake it properly.

Variations

I make this recipe different when I'm making it for my family (picky kids) versus a group of adult friends. It's very versatile!

  • Spicy - add chili pepper flakes to the marinara sauce and swap out the olive oil for pepper infused olive oil for a breadstick dipper with added heat.
  • Deluxe - add sliced onions and peppers, sausage or ham for a supreme style sourdough pizza bread.
  • Kid friendly - keep it simple! My kids love mild pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese and pepperonis with pineapple slices.

And remember, dipping sauces are a key part of this recipe! Marinara, melted herbed butter or Alfredo Sauce are all super yum!

Equipment

Equipment can have a big impact on how a recipe turns out. This sourdough pizza bread can be stretched thin and baked in a sheet pan, dimpled like focaccia in a 9X13 baking dish (what I used today) or even baked in a cast iron skillet or on a pizza stone.

Storage

Store the baked sourdough pizza bread in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. It can be frozen, but if you do this I recommend reheating it in the air fryer or oven rather than microwaving.
