A baked sourdough pizza bread in a white baking dish with tomatoes and mozzarella cheese.

Sourdough Pizza Bread

This sourdough pizza bread is the appetizer you didn't know you needed in your life. It's a thick and tangy sourdough bread base layered with all of your favorite pizza toppings. No fancy equipment necessary, it can be baked in a 9X13 pan and sliced into any size. Whether it is breadsticks or generous slices, you get to decide!

Equipment

  • 9X13 baking dish

Ingredients

  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese shredded
  • ½ cup pizza sauce plus extra for dipping
  • 1 teaspoon Italian herbs dried or fresh

and one recipe for sourdough pizza crust

    Instructions

    • To make the homemade sourdough pizza crust, follow the recipe linked above and begin the process the day before.
    • Make the sourdough pizza crust and spread it into a well oiled 9X13 dish. Preheat the oven to 450°F.
    • Par bake the pizza crust at 450°F for 15 minutes. The crust will be lightly brown but not fully cooked.
    • Add desired toppings, such as pizza sauce, cheese, and Italian herbs, and bake the pizza for an additional 12-15 minutes at 450°F.
    • Let the pizza rest for 5 minutes, then cut into desired sizes. Sourdough pizza bread breadsticks are a crowdpleaser! I like to serve them with dipping sauces. See the notes below!

    Notes

    Serving Suggestion

I love to par-bake my crust earlier in the day and then add the toppings and bake so it's hot and ready when my guests are hungry! I love to serve it with bowls of dipping sauces like spicy marinara or melted butter with garlic.
Optional toppings include: thinly sliced green onions, black olives, sausage, pepperonis, red onion, pineapple or any desired pizza toppings.

    Substitutions

This recipe can be made with store bought sourdough French bread! If you do this, skip the par bake and just slice the bread in half and continue on to adding the toppings and baking.
If you are not concerned with this being a fermented recipe, another option would be to make this pizza crust with store bought crescent roll dough. Follow the directions on the popping fresh dough can to bake it properly.

    Storage

Store the baked sourdough pizza bread in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. It can be frozen, but if you do this I recommend reheating it in the air fryer or oven rather than microwaving.
